The news came as a bombshell: somewhere in late August, Acura announced the return of an iconic model, the Integra. It didn't take much more than that for the automotive world to go wild.
The Acura Integra is one of the most famous Japanese performance cars to be marketed outside of Japan. Originally launched in 1986, the Integra left the North American market after only three generations in 2001. Twenty years later, Honda's luxury division is preparing the model's return for 2022.
Until it arrives in dealerships, here's what we know so far about the new Acura Integra, including its style and structure.
Rumours of the Integra's return have been circulating for some time, but there was no evidence confirming the project. Computer-generated photos even appeared online, but Acura was quick to report that they were faked. The mystery remains, however, as the image of the upcoming model revealed that the creator of the image may have known something; we'll never know.
What we have learned, however, is that the newcomer will pay homage to its past. Then again, the overall styling won't be the only reference to the '80s and '90s model. For example, the image shown by the manufacturer highlights:
During the announcement of the model's return, Jon Ikeda, vice-president of Acura, said that the new vehicle creation will offer the same spirit as its ancestors in terms of driving pleasure. Specifically, the 2022 Acura Integra will adhere to the brand's mantra of precision and performance in all aspects.
Jon Ikeda added that the new Integra will not be a replacement for the ILX sedan. It remains to be seen whether it will be offered in two- and four-door versions, like the original.
Of course, little is known for the moment, but from experience with the quality that Acura always offers across the lineup, we can expect the best of the best with this newcomer. Technology and comfort-focused option packages are announced with features such as:
Acura didn't give any details on the platform that would host the Integra, but we have some ideas. The most logical choice would be to go with the Honda Civic's structure, since it has just been designed, which would de facto reduce the development costs of the model.
As for the engine compartment, the Civic Si's toolbox is very well stocked. This one would however be adjusted for more dynamism. So we know a little more about the performance of the upcoming model:

Indeed, the magnificent 6-speed manual transmission that equips the Type R in the Civic will be available on the A-Spec version of the future Integra.
And since we're at Acura, an all-wheel-drive version could be offered so that we can enjoy a little extra. A Type S configuration will certainly be available for even more performance. Lesser versions of the Integra could complete the lineup, allowing enthusiasts to get their hands on the model and its spectacular design.
What's interesting in all this is Acura's big return to the luxury performance car market. With the Type S version of the TLX making its debut this year, and the announcement of the Integra, there's plenty of material to get excited about.
