If you are looking for a high-end SUV that offers good value, there's no doubt that Acura is an interesting option. But between the two models offered by the brand, which one is really for you?
Check out our 2022 MDX vs RDX comparative assessment by considering features such as dimensions, performance, interior and technology.
Despite their very similar design, if you put the two vehicles side by side, you'll quickly notice the difference in size. The MDX belongs to the mid-size SUV category, while the RDX is a compact SUV.
Inside, the former has room for 7 passengers; the latter is a 5-seat SUV. The Acura MDX dimensions are therefore greater in length, width and height.
As for the 2022 Acura RDX interior, it is described as very comfortable and roomy. In fact, the first and second row space capacity in the MDX and RDX are substantially similar.
Finally, cargo capacity is generous for both. The MDX offers a modular trunk with 512 liters of cargo space, and up to 2,690 liters by lowering the two rear rows; whereas the RDX has a cargo capacity of 881 to 2,260 liters.
When it comes to dimensions, your choice between the Acura RDX vs MDX will depend on your needs, but more particularly on the size of your family.

A smaller SUV usually means more driving ease to navigate city streets. That's the case with the 2022 Acura RDX, which also offers a powerful engine: a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder developing 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque.
During his road test, RPM automotive journalist Luc-Olivier Chamberland mostly appreciated RDX's sporty driving dynamics:
.
"It faces the Germans without any embarrassment in their prime area, driving pleasure."
.
The Sport mode gives the car an incisive and reactive drive, and the Comfort and Normal modes are also well calibrated for a quiet drive.
As for the MDX, it comes standard with a 3.5-liter V6 that gives it 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. It differs from the RDX with the optional Type S model, which uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6, good for 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque.
On both sides, it is paired with a smooth 10-speed automatic transmission. The SH-AWD is also standard.
In addition to power, towing capacity is sometimes an important consideration for drivers. With the RDX, you'll be able to tow loads up to 1,500 lbs, whereas with the MDX, you'll be able to tow up to 3,000 lbs or 5,000 lbs with the towing package!
.
As stated, both vehicles are comfortable and spacious on board, with supportive seats and optional leather upholstery. The front seats and steering wheel are heated as standard, and the driver gets 12 to 16-way power adjustment depending on the trim, as well as optional ventilated front seats.
More expensive, Acura MDX Platinum Elite and the new Type S Ultra go a step further, including, for example:
As for on-board technology, there's also an advanced package on both models. The RDX screen measures 10.2 inches and the MDX's is 12.3 inches. You can connect to your phone apps and there is also an option to connect to integrated navigation system.

.
With Acura, safety isn't an option: it includes the AcuraWatch package as standard with features like:
Finally, even though the MDX generally offers a few more features than the RDX, the Acura MDX price in Canada is also higher than that of its little brother.
